Course Description

The course examines the history of theatre from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. It focuses on the development of theatrical form in terms of aesthetics, style, dramaturgy, theory, and performance practice, while also addressing the socio-historical and ideological contexts in which theatrical genres emerged. Key components of performance such as directing, acting, scenography, and stage design are also explored.

After the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • describe the main developments in theatre history from the late 19th to the mid-20th century;
  • identify, understand, and analyse the aesthetic characteristics of different periods and movements;
  • compare theatrical developments across aesthetics, style, dramaturgy, theory, and performance practice;
  • recognise and critically engage with major figures of modern and contemporary international theatre and their artistic and theoretical work.
